Lieutenant Colonel Dharam Singh was born on 10th July, 1910 in village Badesara, Bhiwani district, Haryana. He is the only son of his parents, his father Chaudhary Ujala Singh having retired from the Indian Army as Subedar Major. After finishing his schooling, Lt. Colonel Dharam Singh joined the Army in 1932. He was commissioned as an officer in the Indian Army on 15th May, 1941. During the World War II he served in the Middle East, Burma, France, Indo-China and Indonesia. During and after partition his unit flew to Jammu and Kashmir on 28th September, 1947 and stayed there till end of hostilities in 1949. Now retired, Lt. Colonel Dharam Singh has six sons. Five of them are serving in the Army as regular officers. His sixth son lives in the New Zealand.

His only daughter is married to a Brigadier in the Indian Army. After retirement he was the Vice-President of the Zila Sainik Board,  Bhiwani for many years.

1948 India-Pakistan War:  On the night of November 7/8, 1948, during the attack on a feature, Lieutenant Colonel Dharam Singh led his battalion extremely well over a difficult country and against a determined enemy. The whole operation was called the 'Second Punch link-up against the Pakistani raiders'. To capture the feature he fought five actions in pitch darkness without any artillery support. Lieutenant Colonel Dharam Singh was always with his forward company and did not care for his personal safety. His conduct in carrying out the attack was an inspiration to all his men, which eventually led to the capture of the feature at dawn. But for his personal bravery, initiative and strong leadership this attack would not have succeeded, and the whole operation would have been jeopardized. For his gallantry he received the Maha Vir Chakra (MVC) on 8th November, 1948.
